As most of you know, I've been the head of a new church ministry in my Region. There have been some good and not so good developments in the area of church planting last year, though for the most part it was a down year in many ways. The good news is that our group... Continue Reading →
Repost: Church Planting and Mainline Church
I wrote this post back in 2006. A lot has changed since this post was written. Sadly, how Progressive Christians view church planting isn't one of them. I sometimes wonder if mainline Protestant churches really have a passion for new churches. I won't go into the nitty gritty of the situation with Community of... Continue Reading →
Repost: Church Planting; A Step of Faith
I'm not saying that pastor and other church leaders should not be paid. What I am saying is that in many cases, we aren't so willing to take a step of faith, in planting churches and in the funding of church plants and planters.
Sermon: “The Unsuccessful Church”
Okay, you probably didn't expect a pastor to use the word “sucks” in a sermon. You also probably didn't expect that I would say that being a minister is not always a bed of roses. However it's true. Being a pastor at times is exciting, but sometimes: yeah, it sucks.
Sunday Sermon: “No Do Overs”
This is a sermon I preached in 2007 for the Baptism of Our Lord which is next Sunday. I happen to be preaching next Sunday. No, I won't be using this sermon. “No Do Overs” Isaiah 43:1-7, Luke 3:15-22 January 7, 2007 (Baptism of Our Lord) Community of Grace Christian Church* Minneapolis, MN Did you... Continue Reading →
Mainline Churches Don’t Give a Rip About Church Planting.
As 2012 draws to a close, I'm taking some time to reflect on the new church ministry in the Christian Church in the Upper Midwest and the hopes for 2013 and church planting in within Mainline Protestantism as a whole. Earlier this year, I kind of fell into leading a ministry team of people interested... Continue Reading →
“Being There” (Version Two)
I will let you in on a little secret. This is actually the second version of the sermon I preached on Pentecost. I had written one sermon and it just didn't work for the situation. So, with about 40 minutes to spare before the service, I made some major edits. So, here is the second... Continue Reading →
Slouching Towards Detroit
Fellow Disciples pastor Steve Knight shared a good post yesterday on the need for more missional communities, which is a fancy way of saying we need more new churches. Why? Beside that whole Great Commission thing, it's also because at least in mainline churches, we are growing smaller and smaller. Here's a graph that Steve... Continue Reading →
Doubt, Fear and Church Planting
On this upcoming Second Sunday of Easter, I wanted to share this sermon I preached back in 2006. It dealt a bit with some of the struggles of church planting and relating that to the fear of the disciples in the locked room. Here's a snippet:You know, I’ve learned something about starting a church: it’s... Continue Reading →
How I Get Autism, Fears and Church Planting in One Post
I am not a good leader. This is not some confession of being guilty of some terrible sin, it's more of a judgement- I'm not a good leader. The people skills that others have, I don't have- at least not naturally. Being someone with Aspergers means having to learn how interact with people, something that is... Continue Reading →
